Soke Cup Results

Taneda Karate Dojo Dominates at the Chito-Ryu World Championships.

The Taneda Karate Dojo captured 14 Gold, 18 Silver and 29 Bronze medals at the 10th Soke Cup in Kumamoto Japan. Over 500 competitors partook in the tri-annual World Championships for the Chito-ryu style of karate. Along with the 61 medals, Glen Kirk was awarded the Male Grand Champion and Michelle Taneda defended her Grand Championship by winning the female award for the 2nd consecutive time.

Michelle captured Silver in women’s black belt kata (forms), Bronze in individual kumite (sparring), Silver in team Kumite and Bronze in team kata. Taneda was the only woman in the black belt division to medal in all four events. it was an easy decision to award her the Female Grand Championship.

Glen Kirk won Gold in masters (40+) kata and Kumite. He also won Bronze in men’s team kumite. Kirk is a former three time men’s Kumite Champion. This is his first Soke Cup as Grand Champion.

The Taneda dojo had four other members that also won four medals. Danielle Kumalae won 2 Gold & 2 Silver medals, Coulson Boothe won one 1 Gold & 3 Silver and Claire Boothe won 1 Gold & 3 Silver, Jessica Lotoski won 3 Silver & 1 Bronze medal.

Triple medalists were Anne Ross 2 Gold & 1 Bronze, Elizabeth Tribe 1 Gold & 2 Bronze,  Kari Taneda 1 Gold 1 Silver & 1 Bronze,  Meranda Lloyd 1 Gold & 2 Bronze Ellen Tribe 1 Silver & 2 Bronze, Emily Tribe 1 Silver & 2 Bronze, Raphaela Russo 3 Bronze.

Double medal winners were Mike Ditson 1 Gold & 1 Bronze, Mike’s Gold medal came in the men’s Black belt Kata division.

Louis Gauer 1 Gold & 1 Silver, Sara Watson 2 Bronze, Lynn Kumalae 2 Bronze, and Phil Taneda 2 Bronze.

Rounding out the medals are Mike Michaud 1 Gold, Erin Johnston 1 Silver, David Carlson 1 Bronze, Craig Kiyono 1 Bronze, Mitch Davis 1 Bronze, Rhiannon Jones 1 Bronze and Michela Russo 1 Bronze.

The team members that put in strong performances were Owen Lloyd, Dave Tribe, Ian Jones, Jackson Tribe, Joe Watson, Emily Jones, Brett Michaud, and Sawyer Pahl. The team was coached by Chris and Cheryl Taneda.

The Taneda Karate Dojo’s Soke Cup Team would like to send a huge thank you to Mike and Cheryl Michaud of Wildcat Helicopters for all their support of the team. Many of the team members would not have been able to participate in this event without their help.

This Black Tie dinner event is to raise funds for the Taneda Athletes competing at the 2010 CHITO-RYU karate world championships in Kumamoto Japan. Ben Stewart MLA as guest speaker, Live Auction, Silent Auction, karate demo, dinner and a great night out.
